Identical
twins Graeme and John Howie, performing together
as The Howie Bros, have, for more than thirty
years, been bringing their close vocal harmonies
to a legion of music lovers, initially as members
of the award winning band, 1901. The Howie
brothers have thirty albums to their credit and
are three time Golden Guitar winners at the Australian
Country Music Awards in Tamworth. They are
the only Australians to have won the coveted
International Harmony Award presented annually
in Nashvile, Tennessee. The Howie brothers have
been special guests on the world famous cruise
ship QE2, on the leg from Tahiti to Auckland
and are the only Australian Country Music act
to be honoured in this way. The twins were recently
presented with the Victorian Entertainer of the
Year award. The Howie brothers, while Melbourne
based, tour constantly throughout Australia.
John has a Bachelor of Music degree from the
University of Melbourne, where he studied classical
music and music education. John taught music
in secondary schools for over 20 years.
Graeme Howie gained first class honours
when he studied classical piano at Melbourne University
and subsequently became a secondary school music
teacher responsible for many major seconday school
music programs over a period spanning nearly 30
years. He has been, and still is, a prolific songwriter
and many of his songs are featured on the Howie
Bros albums. He and his wife Dianne have also had
great success in recording and marketing through
his company Glenample Records a series of Howie
Bros albums.
John Howie
is an Australian musician who lives in Melbourne.
He and his identical twin brother, Graeme, perform together as
The Howie Brothers, a well-known country/easy listening
vocal harmony recording act. John and Graeme
were previously members of country band 1901,
which won three Golden Guitar awards at Tamworth
(Australia), including Group of the Year on two
occasions. The Howie Brothers has released approximately
20 albums. John plays various instruments, including
piano, drums, accordion & guitar.
John is a keen songwriter and is currently writing
a book on songwriting.
In the early 1990s John
came up with the idea of running Music Tours
- group sightseeing tours with a focus on music
in the evenings. He ran his first tour, to Ireland,
in 1995. He has now organised and led 11 annual
tours to Ireland, as well as tours to Scotland,
America, New Zealand, Tahiti and the Australian
Outback. John finds running music tours very
satisfying–he has a passion
for music and travel and he thoroughly enjoys getting
to know the people who go on his tours.
